The magic of early development blossoms

Healthy Eating in Childcare: A Week on Our Plate

In your child’s early years, good nutrition fuels more than just their growth – it supports focus, confidence, emotional wellbeing, and the foundation for lifelong healthy habits.
At ONE Early Education, we’re proud to serve healthy, multicultural meals that introduce children to exciting new tastes while supporting their growing bodies and minds.

Our on-site cooks and group nutritionist create seasonal menus, delicious snacks and meals designed to foster optimal development and wellbeing. Food is prepared and cooked fresh daily, tailored to meet children’s dietary needs.

Join us as we take you through a typical week on the plate at ONE, and share how our educators support children, including fussy eaters, to build positive relationships with food.

Our Philosophy on Healthy Eating

Healthy food habits start early, and they’re best built in positive environments that are free from pressure. In the early years, children form lifelong associations with food, mealtimes, and their own sense of hunger and satisfaction. That’s why we focus not only on what children eat, but also how, when, and with whom they eat it.

Our approach balances expert nutritional planning with warm, responsive care from educators who understand that every child is different. Some children are adventurous eaters; others need gentle encouragement and time.

At One, we meet each child where they’re at, introducing new foods slowly, celebrating small wins, and always modelling joyful, relaxed mealtimes.

Our Seasonal Menu

Every meal is thoughtfully designed to fuel concentration, support digestion, and introduce children to new textures, colours, and cultures through food. This inspires adventurous eaters, builds confidence around trying new things, and lays the groundwork for a healthy relationship with food that lasts a lifetime.

Our seasonal menus rotate weekly, so our children enjoy assorted flavours and textures and get all the nutrients needed for active growing children:

1.  Breakfast – Starting the Day Right

The most important meal of the day!

Children who eat breakfast regularly are more likely to make nutritious food choices throughout the day. Our breakfast menu sets the tone for healthy habits:

  • Boosts brain function: After a long night of fasting, breakfast restores glucose levels (the brain’s main energy source), helping improve memory, attention span, and problem-solving skills.
  • Stabilises mood and energy: A balanced breakfast helps regulate blood sugar levels, reducing irritability and fatigue.
  • Inclusions: Wholegrains (e.g., oats, toast), healthy fats (e.g., avocado), fruit, dairy or non-dairy alternatives, and lean protein (e.g., eggs).

2. Morning Tea – Refuelling Between Breakfast and Lunch

Young children burn energy quickly. A mid-morning snack keeps them alert and focused until lunchtime.

  • Supports stable blood sugar levels: Light snacks reduce the risk of sugar crashes that can affect behaviour and concentration.
  • Encourages hydration and digestive rhythm: Morning tea is often paired with water or milk, supporting hydration and digestion.
  • Inclusions: : Light, nutrient-dense options like fruit, cheese, yoghurt, wholegrain crackers, or veggie sticks.

3. Lunch – The Main Event

Lunch is a great opportunity to supply children with essential macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fats) and micronutrients (iron, zinc, vitamins).

  • Replenishes energy: High-protein and iron-rich foods help children stay mentally engaged in afternoon learning.
  • Encourages social development: Mealtimes often involve group interaction, turn-taking, and food conversations that support social skills.
  • Inclusions: Balanced meals with vegetables, lean protein (meat, legumes, fish), wholegrains, and a healthy fat source.

A few highlights from our current menu include:

  • Tasty Thai-inspired chicken meatballs served with soft rice noodles and colourful veggies, all gently seasoned to suit little taste buds.
  • Asian chicken strips with smashed avocado and pita bread – a fun, finger-friendly meal that’s big on flavour and nutrition.
  • Greek Moussaka with creamy béchamel sauce. Packed with protein, fibre, and flavour, our moussaka not only delights but also supports children’s growing bodies and curious taste buds! We also offer a vegetarian alternative.

4. Afternoon Tea – The Post-Nap Pick-Me-Up

After rest or high activity, children need a gentle energy boost to remain calm and engaged.

  • Reduces end-of-day meltdowns: A well-timed afternoon snack helps manage blood sugar and mood, especially in younger children.
  • Promotes positive associations with healthy snacks: Offering tasty, nutrient-rich options reinforces long-term healthy choices.
  • Inclusions: : Savoury muffins, fruit, yoghurt, wholegrain snacks, or veggie-based finger foods

Designed by Experts

Our entire menu is created by a qualified nutritionist who understands both the science of child development and the art of practical family eating. Meals are rich in:

  • Wholegrains
  • Lean proteins
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Healthy fats
  • Iron-rich foods to support brain development

We limit added sugars and heavily processed foods without compromising on flavour, variety, or the joy of discovering new tastes at mealtime.

Cooked Fresh Daily

Every centre has its own on-site cook and access to modern, commercial-grade kitchens. This means children enjoy the freshness and quality of a home-cooked meal – no pre-packed trays or mass-produced food.

We love that this allows us to cater to individual allergies and cultural requirements with care and respect.

Supporting Families at Home

Nutrition doesn’t end at pick-up. We partner with our families by:

  • Sharing daily updates about what your child ate, and what new foods they tried
  • Offering nutrition workshops at our centres
  • Providing simple recipes or snack ideas you can try at home

We’re here to support you on the journey of raising a healthy, confident eater – because what happens at ONE should complement what happens in your kitchen, too.

At ONE Early Education, mealtimes are about more than just food – they’re moments to connect, explore, and thrive. With fresh daily cooking, expertly designed menus, and a warm, responsive mealtime culture, we’re proud to serve healthy, multicultural meals that nourish children from the inside out.
